The kind of listening I teach creates an immediate trust between speaker and listener. This allows the speaker to dig deeper in his or her being to address core issues. Many of these issues have been unresolved since childhood. Some of these issues could unlock inner strengths and talents that have never been used before. This type of listening may unlock certain mysteries of the universe found in individuals who are not aware of them. This type of listening is not what most consider listening to be.
Are you a good listener? Most believe that they are yet statistics tell us that most use only 25% of their listening skills and have no desire to improve them. Listening effectively is not a skill we develop in growing up. What we learn to do from the first word or phrase we learn is to interpret what we think it means. Such interpretation is not listening.
Look at two people facing each other. One is talking and the other is “listening?” Do we assume that because the listener is sitting still with eyes focused on the speaker’s eyes? How do we know if the listener is actually listening? How does the speaker know the listener is listening? The listener must indicate from time to time that he or she is indeed listening. This can be done by repeating a few words verbatim or asking a question to clarify something said. But even when this kind of listening is performed, trust is not felt by the speaker and that person stops sharing the depth of thought or emotion. The trust is violated by any number of distractions. Unless the listener is trained to ignore all distractions, the trust needed will not be present.
I teach individuals, couples and small groups how to listen so as to dispel all distractions and maintain the trust needed for as long as the connection is needed. The course is two hours in length, costs $400, and is taught via Zoom by Lane Stokes who developed this particular type of listening.
