We know that there are many ways to pray, but the one we like most for loving individuals is called “Praying for Results”. Results are good. They encourage us to pray more, love more. How many prayers have you made without an answer? Some people think that if they don’t get an answer it is God saying “No”. Without some kind of plausible answer, we get confused or doubt the power of prayer. When we pray for results, we usually get them.
My favorite character in the Bible was King Saul. When he prayed, he expected immediate results. If he did not get immediate results, he looked around for the reason, usually the actions of another person. One time the person preventing the prayer was his own son. Because that kind of prayer was possible for Saul, it is possible for all of us. Saul was just the example.
May I suggest that you begin “Praying for Results” with someone close to you, someone you love. Pray specifically for God to fill that individual with the “peace that passes all understanding”. Then watch that person’s behavior for the next few days. Does that person seem more at peace? Have they been worrying about something and all of a sudden the worry is gone or at least lessened? You can even ask the person if they have been feeling less anxious lately or at peace. Pray that for others as well.
I went under the knife years ago and one of our associate pastors told me that he would pray for me at the time of the surgery. I didn’t think about his words until I took the elevator to the floor of the surgery. Before that I was nervous, very nervous and it showed in my actions. But as soon as I stepped off the elevator I was immersed in that peace that passes all understanding. It was incredible. No more fear or worry. I was at absolute peace through the whole process.
Think of “Praying for Results” as more akin to talking to the person through the Holy Spirit. Instead of a formal prayer to God on the person’s behalf, just talk to him or her as if you were there. Don’t think that you are violating any rules. Christians have prayed in this manner for centuries.
