Courses “How to Listen” and “How to Hear”

Why did our parents never teach us how to listen and hear when we were growing up? How would you teach a child how to listen? It took me months to figure it out. How do you make sure that a listener has listened to everything you have said? You have him or her repeat everything you have said. Simple, huh? No, not simple. Twenty intelligent and articulate adults in our church could not repeat a few simple sentences. It was the most fun I think any of us had ever had in church in our lives! But every one of us learned the skill of listening and it changed our lives forever. It also gave us more ways to serve the church.

Learning to hear or understand what the person speaking means by his or her words is simply not done in our society.
None of us grow up hearing because it’s almost impossible to find anybody who can teach that skill. That’s why my course “How to Hear” is so important. I teach it after a person has learned to listen.

My proposal to you is to teach five couples, including you and your wife, to listen. First of all, it will teach the couple how to listen and that will increase the love for each other. The children will learn by example. Imagine a teenager listening to the parents! Second, the five couples will be instrumental in teaching the members of your church to listen to your sermons, classes and board meetings. Once we have established listening in your church, we will move on to How to Hear.
