Are You Stuck?

Are You Stuck?

Are you stuck, that is, have you been conditioned to feel stuck when attempting to reach a goal?   I first learned of it when working with the Borderline Personality Disorder. In the Victorian Era conditioning was a science. Mothers withheld milk, blanket and cuddling from female babies to train then not to be willful. It worked because not getting those needs met, the female child sensed that she would die if she did not obey the mother perfectly. Mothers did this to prevent the child, but more importantly the mother from being ostracized. For decades this method of conditioning was passed from mother to daughter and was the predominant method of raising daughters. Since that time, parents have used conditioning to cause guilt and shame in children to control them. Thus, whenever the child or adult goes contrary to the wishes of the parent and for young women who marry, their husbands, they suffer a horrible sense of annihilation I call the Dread.

When conditioned, a child and then the adult grows up to be indecisive and unable to do as he or she desires. When conditioned, it is easy to get stuck when attempting movement forward. Modern men and women have a great deal of confidence and courage in overcoming barriers to having what they want. This is why getting “stuck” is not normal. If you or somebody you know gets stuck in reaching for a goal, it would be wise to call on a professional counselor to find out why. Such a “stuck-ness” usually comes from the unconscious mind. Therefore, a counselor trained in psychoanalytic or psychodynamic therapies would be best. CounselingServicesAtlanta.com.
